Happy 6th Birthday to Mark!

Happy 6th Birthday to Mark!

Can you believe that THIS little guy...
...has grown into THIS big handsome guy?!!

On Saturday we had 11 little friends over for Mark's bug-themed birthday party. It was kind of fun to have a mix of school friends, church friends, and other friends all together.

As kids arrived, I sent them into the living room to bounce on the couch.

Here are all but 2 of the kids.

I think Mark might be happy. Just a little.
Later that day we celebrated again with Grandma and Grandpa Griffing.

Mark with his red-kneed tarantula hat that I made him, and his red-kneed tarantula cake that I baked.

Look at that wonderful 6-year-old smile!

What a treat to get to celebrate with the grandparents!

Mark blowing out his 6 candles...

Sean went to bed early that day - he was completely exhausted from Mark's party, and from having so much fun with Grandma and Grandpa!
Dear Mark, we love you SOOOOOOOOOOO much, and are SOOOOOOOO blessed to have you in our family! Happy 6th birthday!

...a bucket of beans!

Today I set up what is now my (and the boys') new favorite toy: the bean/maize bucket! I bought about 15lbs of whole corn cernels (whatever was cheapest in the Winco bulk bins), added some beans and lentils for interest, and then also added magnet ABCs and plastic (dollar store) bugs! The boys played with it for 2 hours while I baked!

At first Sean was scared of the sound of the beans and corn in the bucket, but then he really loved it.

Mark had fun discovering the bugs etc. that I had put in there!

Score!

This is the most cooperatively the boys have played for a long time. I loved it! ( For the record, Sean does NOT have a faux hawk. His hair came out of nap looking like this.)

I was glad to have swept the floor beforehand - it did make a mess. When they were done, we swept up the spilled beans, and put them back in the bucket. Next time I'll put a sheet underneath for easier clean-up.

I think we have a new favorite rainy day activity!

I think I'll look through their bath toys and see what might work well with this. I purposefully got a deep bucket (rather than e.g. a shallow rubbermaid etc), because I wanted them to have the experience of putting their whole arm in. Also, a 5 gallon bucket is light enough that I can carry it out to the garage.

Visiting the 'Oooh-ooh-dogs'

We went to the Zoo on Tuesday - sorry no pics! However, I wanted to share with you that Sean walked the entire time (one of the reasons why there aren't any pics), and was VERY excited to see the animals. He was able to name many of them, and had lots to say about what he saw. My favorite of Sean's animal-words was: "Ooh-ooh-dog!" which was yelled again and again and again while he visited with the monkeys.

Many of the enclosures were being cleaned, so e.g. the hippos had no water in their pond. This was kind of nice, in my opinion, because this meant we got to see more than just the tops of their heads.

OINK! (bed hogs!)

On the weekend (and sometimes during the week) the boys like to join us in bed in the morning. Although cuddling them is somewhat akin to hugging an egg beater, I really love family snuggle time...

I love that the boys like to bring books when they climb into bed with us!

I love that the boys are SILLY when they climb into bed with us!

I have no idea how the boys can BOTH be so chipper in the morning, even though Ben and I are both NOT morning people!
